John Hanson Battye

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our brother, John Hanson Battye, on September 25, 2026. 

John had just celebrated his 70th birthday with all of his siblings a few months earlier. John was the eldest of Betty Battye’s seven children. Our mom passed away in October 2019. Like his mom, John shared a deep love of the outdoors. He loved being outside, especially walking the trails and enjoying the peace and beauty of nature. He often shared pictures of his adventures on his Facebook page, giving others a glimpse of the places and moments he enjoyed. John had many interests and passions. He was an amateur astrologer, always curious about the stars, planets and the mysteries beyond us. Over the years, he even built a few telescopes to explore his fascination with the night sky. Music was another important part of John’s life. He had been playing guitar and singing since his early teens, and music remained a true passion throughout his life. Even when arthritis made it difficult and left his fingers bent out of shape, he never let that stop him from playing and enjoying the music he loved. John’s passing was untimely and unexpected. He was not ready to go. He fought right to the bitter end, holding on and battling for as long as he could. His passing leaves a tremendous hole in the lives of those who loved him.

He will be deeply missed by his six siblings, Frances, Mark, Christina, Andrew, Rachel and Catherine; his son,John Jr. and wife Brianne ;his loving partner in life Lesley and her children, Michael(Amanda), Chyrs ,Chelle(Dan), Nelle; his best friend, Tom; his 9 adoring grandchildren,and the countless friends and people whose lives he touched along the way.

Life is not always fair, and sometimes we are forced to say goodbye when we are simply not ready. We will remember John by telling his stories, looking at his pictures, remembering his music, and carrying a little bit of him with us wherever we go. John’s cremation has taken place, and rather than a traditional funeral, we would like to celebrate his life together.

A Celebration of John’s Life will be held at the Goderich Legion on October 23 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to come, share stories, bring pictures, remember the good times, and celebrate the life of a man who meant so much to so many. 

Donations in John’s memory may be made to the Goderich Memorial Hospital or to your local Legion branch. Until we meet again, John. We will miss you, big brother.
